Context

Philips Capsule is a medical device integration and data platform that connects hospital medical devices to electronic health records. It comprises the Medical Device Information Platform (MDIP), Capsule Axon, and Capsule Vitals Stream.

Challenge

Integrating new features into a large legacy platform while building a consistent workflow and design language across products. The platform was dated, but clinicians relied on it and had no appetite to relearn their tools. The task: transform a complicated process into an intuitive one — without disrupting the workflows people trusted.

My role

Integrating new features into a large legacy platform while building a consistent workflow and design language across products. The platform was dated, but clinicians relied on it and had no appetite to relearn their tools. The task: transform a complicated process into an intuitive one — without disrupting the workflows people trusted.

What I did

• Audited the legacy tools before making any design decisions. The audit confirmed the core problems: missing critical features and no viable upgrade path, leaving a workflow that was complex and hard to maintain.
• Structured the workflow and built a consistent design system across all products.
• Prototyped entire features, giving the team decision-making freedom and a clear way to present the product to stakeholders.
• Designed for scale, shipping feature by feature.
• Led handoff in close collaboration with development teams.

Outcome

Built three main features and more than ten smaller ones, and integrated the local design system into Philips Healthcare's global brand system. The new features were adopted by stakeholders for their real-time savings and ease of use.
